James has an exceedingly strange take on the world – a world that represents bold and brilliant storytelling.

 

We discovered James through his daringly original short films and cheeky music clips. From the day we met, it was clear that this guy embodied the talent and drive that will excite the industry.

 

James’s IFTA nominated short film Skunky Dog screened to much acclaim at the world’s largest festivals, while his music video for The Funeral Suits shot him to mainstream notoriety, making him one of the hottest talents out there right now.

James has been honing his filmmaking skills since he was 15. Through performance driven stories, striking visuals with a touch of the oddball, he has created an evocative filmmaking style.

 

He has just polished off his new film for Prizefight Whiskey. His story follows a war pilot who has crash-landed on foreign land and is saved by his enemy. On a polar Offaly bog, we experienced firsthand the trust James establishes with his cast and the loyalty of his freezing crew. Check it out HERE

We met some amazing people who wanted to take the time to write a thank you note to the special people that host them at christmas. Aoife directed ‘Numbers’ part of ‘Under Armour’s’ latest global campaign “It Comes From Below,”  featuring professional baseball player,  Bryce Harper. “Numbers” tells Harper’s story through the voice of his high school coach, Sam Thomas. The film illustrates that in a sport dominated by numbers, the genesis of Harper’s brilliance comes not from statistics, but from the first step and pivot in the batter’s box.  We promise you’ll feel inspired! KEN WARDROP X MOM & ME

Ken’s has completed his latest documentary, Mom & Me, and it has been playing at festivals including Telluride and Edinburgh. It has picked up great awards for best documentary along the way including an IFTA and the Cleveland Film Festival. It will be playing at the Galway Fleadh on Saturday 9th July, and goes on general release in Ireland on July 15th. It’s really worth a watch – check out it’s trailer here.

Jamie shot Super Valu’s latest Good Food Karma ad. We took over a whole village and threw our own mini food festival, inviting all the locals and super chefs Kevin Dundon, Martin Shanahan and The Happy Pear. Despite unexpected storms hitting our set, Jamie managed to make it look bright and sunshiny, and was a great shoot. Check it out here.

Aoife has directed Honda’s spectacular new brand campaign. The film opens with a shot of Honda’s humanoid robot, ASIMO, staring out at the horizon at sunrise, before cutting to a fleet of Honda vehicles lined up on a runway, as though they are about to take off. The piece is absolutely stunning, and framed by incredible sound design. You’re going to want to watch it again and again. Here.

AOIFE MCARDLE X BULMERS

Aoife got a taste of Bulmers and shot their latest campaign. With the new slogan ‘Not a moment too soon’, Aoife chose a series of shots which show slow at its most beautiful – from dawn breaking, to drips filling jam jars to a game of chess. These epic shots were filmed over two days, a huge amount of love went into it and it really paid off.

The end result is absolutely beautiful, and really shows slow at its finest.

AOIFE MCARDLE X U2

Aoife’s short film ‘Every Breaking Wave’ is a visual essay of U2′s song of the same name, was released yesterday, and it is brilliant.

The response to it has been massive, with some of the world’s biggest directors commenting on it. Spike Jonze said “I had never seen anything by Aoife before but was really taken with this film. She captured that feeling and size of life of being a teenager and of first love so well. She drifts between the reality of friends and first love into fantasy so effortlessly and romantically. It’s a perfect little gem of a romance movie.”

And Alejandro González Iñárritu (director of Birdman) also said “The piece is full of sound and fury. It contains all that a young artist’s work should: a lot of things to say and feel, said with fucking guts, vision and ambition. There is no fear in McArdle’s piece but plenty of humanity; shot and expressed with poetry without betraying the truth”

SHANE GRIFFIN X NATIONAL LOTTERY

Shane shot National Lottery’s latest ad for Euro Million Challenge. The concept was based on a Rube Goldberg machine, with each element triggering the next movement in a chain reaction, and all this shot in one camera move.

Shane and his team at Method in New York created a 3D animatic, which was brought to life by a specialist team in Toronto, and we shot on location there. Quite the adventure was had shooting it over in Canada, with the post in Method New York – massive thanks to everyone in DDFH&B.

We got some lovely visitors from both LA and Germany in August to shoot their latest Kerrygold commercials, with Steph Greene directing. Each shoot took us around Ireland for a few days, and with the incredible weather every field looked like Kerrygold heaven. HENRY MASON X PEPSI/BOTTLETOP/NARCISCO RODRIGUEZ

Henry flew to Brazil recently to shoot for Narcisco Rodriguez’s Bottletop Collection with Pepsi. Narcisco Rodriguez has created a handbag collection, made from recycled Pepsi can tops to raise money for the Bottletop Foundation, and Henry’s engaging film tells the story of the creation of the handbag designs. He manages to show the empowering effect this campaign is having for the women at the Bottletop atelier and the community of Itapua in Salvador, Brazil. Henry’s film documents the creation of the designs as works of art and in an expression of the concept that many great works of art are created in circumstances of adversity.  It has been getting brilliant reactions globally.

Ken worked with DDFH&B recently on a new piece for Denny – as we flew a young family home from Australia whose first baby hadn’t met her grandparents yet. The ad which is airing now, follows the family as they greet the grandfather at the airport, reunite with the rest of the family at home, and experience their first ‘taste of home’ as they sit down for breakfast – a day packed with emotion.

Trocaire 2014 Lent Campaign Malawi

We headed off to Malawi in December to film Trocaire’s 2014 Lent campaign. We shot in two local villages which Trocaire have been working with – and the difference between them was stark, as you’ll see in the campaign. We had an incredible time, with Jamie shooting every possible second over the four day shoot, capturing all the mesmerising moments Malawi offered us. A massive thanks to Carol in Publicis and Nicola and Eithne in Trocaire for such a special and memorable trip.

What a difference a year can make. We’ve been working really hard to get Antidote into the spotlight, with one ICAD award in 2012. This year we’re utterly delighted to say that across our roster of Antidote directors, we are up for NINE different awards at the ICAD ceremony on Thursday night.

The darling of Irish music festivals, Electric Picnic, turns 10 this year! William approached the organisers with a concept he had written about a girl’s journey experiencing the festival for the first time and they agreed to let him make it.

The resulting two minutes is a ride through the magic, lights and mood of the event, and we’re really proud to have been behind this as a company. We can’t wait to get down there and party!

With a few Eurovision fans in here, we were very excited to be asked to help produce a video piece for this year’s Eurovision extravaganza. Tanja worked closely with the guys in Camp David to source the cast and locations they needed for their one day shoot in Ireland. They chose Roddy Boland’s pub in Dublin 6 for a good old sing-along scene, and Fitzgerald’s in Avoca Village, Co. Wicklow for a country pub scene.

If you’re tuning into the Eurovision tomorrow look out for it – it’s part of the opening sequence.

Big shout out to Erik, Robert, Jacob and Johanna of Camp David Productions – it was really great to work with you guys. And many thanks to all the Eurovision fans who took part in the filming and to Roddy Boland’s and Fitzgerald’s for their hospitality.

Shane has been making big waves in the advertising world, last year alone winning both a gold for best animation at the Sharks, and an ADC Young Gun Award. His use of colour in everything he does is incredible, and this combined with his passion to tell evocative stories has us on the edge of our seats.. Needless to say – expect big things!

Lee directed Connacht Gold’s new commercial with a huge crew down in Sligo and it involved all sorts of mad cows! The cow costumes were custom made over in London and were incredible. As always, Lee brought the good weather with him, and the sun shone for most of the shoot (bar the odd snow shower!). Thanks to Tony, Judy and Adrian in Havas – a great chilly couple of days were had by all.

Jamie and a small crew went around Ireland for 5 days recently to film stings for Cadbury Crispello and Bubbly bars for TV3’s Xposé. The documentary-style stings were of the fashion designers taking part in the ‘Inspired by Crispello’ project, and we couldn’t have been made feel more welcome by each of them. Look out for the stings that are airing at the moment. Big thanks to everyone involved.

Lee directed the new Molson Canadian commercial which you may have seen airing in cinemas recently. This commercial kicks off Molson’s launch in Ireland. The three-day shoot took place in Dublin and Wicklow, taking in some stunning scenery – which Lee and the crew managed to make look even more breathtaking!

Our leading toddler Evan was incredibly patient and laughed through every take– which may have had something to do with the super puppets Sean brought along to keep everyone entertained. Wow, we are incredibly proud of this! Sean Branigan’s commercial for Horseware Ireland has racked up over 60,000 views (and climbing) within 7 days of posting on YouTube! WHAAAAAT!

Horseware was made on a micro-budget with a tiny crew and is literally proof that the right director can make a good idea hurdle it’s way into the spotlight. A huge thank you to Horseware, Alex Calder and Sam Doyle for trusting Sean to go with his instincts, it’s that type of creative freedom that results in work like this. We are thrilled, and we think you might be hearing a bit more about this as the year goes on.

Sean was recently asked to work on an ad for Horseware, one of Ireland’s most well-known equestrian products with a reputation that reaches the rest of the world. With a limited budget, passion for the project came from every corner and a brilliant team assembled for the frosty two day shoot in Wicklow. We packed our bags for India over December, where Will directed Trocaire’s 2013 Lent campaign. Filming in a village that the charity has worked with directly for the past few years, it was an incredible opportunity to see a part of the country far off the beaten tourist track. There were some bumpy roads, mesmerizing landscapes and a lot of laughing over our three day shoot. A huge thanks to Carol, Briain, Rachel and Ruth from Publicis and Nicola from Trocaire, it was a special trip that we won’t forget anytime soon.

This was as epic as it sounds. Red Bull Ireland asked Jamie to helm the video for their unique event, the FOX HUNT. Top downhill rider Gee Atherton is given a handicap of 10 seconds against 120 riders from around Ireland who race to get to the finish line first. Filmed against the awesome scenery of Belfast’s Cavehill Mountain in late November, the mud, speed and sheer scale of the event were a thrill to experience and even more fun to film. Jamie did a stellar job directing a 7 camera set-up including some dizzying helicopter photography in the wintery conditions, and fair play to Gee for battling it out to 2nd place!

In what was a competitive and demanding casting session, one-year old Bear Brady delivered the goods to land the starring role, making it look like he’d been in the game all his life. Lee was recently at the helm of a charming 40″ spot for EBS about life being on hold, shot beautifully on the Phantom camera. A huge thanks to Stephen, Judy, Shane, Tony and Colm at Youngs (who are now sporting a fancy new name of Havas), aside from a dog that wasn’t all that interested in jumping, it was a great shoot and a really enjoyable project to work on.

Earlier this year Antidote began working with a very talented new director Jamie Delaney, who with a background in graphic design and photography brings a very developed eye to his work. With three Antidote projects already in the bag, including a wonderfully crafted doc short A Place To Gather, a banging music video for Kid Karate and visually rich brand film for major Chinese fashion label Bosideng, it’s fair to say Jamie has hit the ground running and is a bloody exciting prospect for Antidote going forward. William Armstrong was awarded a Shark for Most Promising New Director for his Jaguar test commercial ‘Roam This Place’ at this years 50th anniversary of the Kinsale Shark ad awards, which is fantastic recognition for an emerging director both internationally and at home.

This year saw the event held in a beautiful new venue Inishannon House and the Antidote team arrived in their Sunday best for the, er, Saturday night party. The guest creative speaker was Tony Kaye (director of American History X, and countless brilliant commercials) and the weather turned up for the party too ;)

Jamie was recently asked to direct the brand film to launch mens fashion label Bosideng, who opened their flagship store in London last month. It marks the first foray of a major Chinese brand into the high street market – and we were delighted to receive the brief that represented fashion, the wild outdoors and the brand’s symbolic birds of prey.

The result is a cinematic, sweeping visual piece that took us to brooding landscapes of Kerry and allowed us the chance to film some majestic birds up close. A huge thanks to design agency Mammal and marketing agency RSM for the chance to do something so cool.

Jamie’s latest music video for up and coming act Kid Karate features pro Irish skater Keith Walsh and was filmed in Dublin’s Darndale in August. It’s a visceral grungy ode to a band who have been called one of the best live performances in the country. There’s even a petrol bomb to send it off. Ready set GO.

ROSS McDONNELL X HAVEN HAITI

Between shooting stills in Afghanistan and filming a documentary in Pakistan, Ross also just completed a 30 second ad with Antidote for the Haven Partnership, an Irish charity working in Haiti.

The key issues the charity focuses on are water, shelter and education, so along with ad agency Red Dog a campaign was created to put things in perspective for Irish viewers. Ross and the Antidote team spent 4 days in Haiti, working from Port au Prince and other nearby towns to get in and document people’s stories and the conditions being faced there. It was a truly unique trip, witnessing some of the world’s poorest places, but also experiencing the pride and generosity of the Haitian people.

The tail end of our trip also collided with the arrival of Hurricane Isaac, which meant airport closures and a few more days on the ground until it passed! The finished piece is here.

New Antidote director Jamie Delaney has been hard at work on several new projects which we can’t wait to tell you about! In the meantime here’s his first with Antidote, A Place To Gather, a 5 min documentary for the Crafts Council of Ireland.

Setting out to tell 5 different stories about Irish ‘makers’ from Donegal to Cork, Jamie had the opportunity to cover a range of beautiful places and also put the miles and miles of Irish tarmac to the test. The result is a textured, abstract feel for Ireland, its people and the beauty of its crafts.

The piece is part of the London Design Festival and will be viewed at a specially commissioned CCOI exhibition (Redchurch St in Shoreditch if you fancy popping down). The film will also sit in the EU Parliament foyer as part of Ireland’s EU presidency in 2013. Thanks to CCOI, Keith Nally, Jonathan Legge from Makers & Brothers and Garrett Pitcher from Indigo & Cloth.

William is better known as a producer around these parts, but directed his first test commercial in May this year, which went on to win Silver at the CFP-E shots Young Director Award at the Cannes Lions! It’s an exciting result and we’re really proud to be standing up against fierce competition on an international stage.

“It was about exploring wild places and seeing beautiful things and arriving at the conclusion that you’d led a life well lived. The car you drove was partly responsible for that, so it became a lesson – when the man finds what he’s looking for, he hands over the car so that the next man can begin the search for himself. Suddenly it was a car ad and the only thing it needed to fulfill that was a set of keys.”

Sean was chosen to direct the new spot for Triton Ireland, revolving around the concept of ‘Triton Time’ from the think tank of Irish agency IO (follow them if you know what’s good for ya @thisisIO). The script allowed for a lot of fun in showing the chaos of a busy working day contrasted with that blissful moment when the hot water turns on and the stress of it all washes away. The agency Publicis QMP also picked up another one for same ad, so everybody got to add something to their cabinet.

Lee Cronin’s piece for CawleyNea\TBWA won GOLD for interactive at the first annual tvads.ie awards this month. The campaign for Audi has collected a few other awards here and there since it was released. The video used Facebook connect to automatically pull in user’s photographs of themselves, their friends and other details to make a personalised video inviting the viewer to take part in a country wide search, with the winner able to drive away with the new Audi A1. Our big announcement! A few months ago, Lee Cronin won an international four-way pitch against some stiff UK and US competition to direct FOURTEEN spots for 118118 in the UK, the infamous number directories duo. The Antidote team headed over to London with our 5 shooting days co-inciding perfectly with the London riots. Needless to say, we found ourselves doubting location choices of among others Enfield, where it all kicked off! Even with the heavy shooting schedule there was a lot of fun on set, thanks to our clients 118118 and of course the supercool NYC agency The Brooklyn Brothers @BrooklynBrosNYC.
